What is “Functional Fitness” for an Ann Arbor Man In His 50's?
Trying to stay active and fit in your later years?
Need a trainer gym in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area to help you stay in peak shape?
What is “functional fitness?” It's a phrase that gets tossed around quite often, but there is no clear definition of what it means and most times, in my observation at least, people associate it with equipment and exercises (i.e. TRX straps, lunges, etc.)
“Functional fitness" actually is a fitness routine intended to enhance your ability to do whatever task that you want in life. It’s actually meant to be functional – not simply look toned and fit.
Maybe you want to be able to hike Mt. Kilimanjaro. Well, then you would want your fitness routine to prepare your body to do that task. Performing lunges in this situation would be "functional" as it would help build lower body strength, local muscle endurance, and stability that would help enhance the quality of your hike.
On the other hand, if you were to neglect lower body training, and do nothing but biceps curls and bench press exercises in order to prepare for your hike. We wouldn't consider this "functional" as executing these movements would not prepare your body for the hike - although you would probably look pretty damn good from mid-torso up! A functional fitness trainer will be able to help you build the exercise routine necessary to help you reach your goal.
