My internship at COVAL has been invaluable to my personal growth and development.  Mike’s coaching style reflects how well he is able to apply the material learned in the classroom to real-life situations.  He is not only extremely knowledgeable but is also able to break down complex concepts and explain them to a young coach. 

 I was given power over exactly how much I could gain out of the internship.  One of the biggest takeaways from COVAL was gaining an appreciation for how movement can affect the way the human body functions.  In addition to shadowing and learning from amazing coaches, I was also given the opportunity to actually coach and interact with clients.  The first-hand experience pushed me to see how well I truly understood and could apply the material I was learning.

The culture at COVAL fosters continuous growth and development, which is evident in the entire team.  All of the coaches were extremely helpful in providing explanations to my questions and resources I could use to explore the topics further.  I was very grateful for the opportunity to join the team because I knew it could only help me become the best coach I could be.  With such a large emphasis on continuing education, I know I will constantly strive for betterment.  I know I will always be able to reflect back each year, and see how much of a better coach I have become.

My piece of advice for anybody looking to become a great coach is to take yourself out of your comfort zone.  Take time to identify areas that you could improve upon and challenge yourself to develop them into strengths.  Provide yourself opportunities to learn from failure and it will push you to not only be a better coach but a better person.  When I first started working with clients I struggled with confidence and basic communication skills.  Being put in a situation where I was allowed to develop these has opened so many new doors for me, and allowed me to develop more meaningful relationships.
