Be honest with your answers!  What did you guess?

In pic 1 there are 585 calories.

In pic 2 there are 640 calories.

With pic 2 you're probably thinking, "okay, I knew it was going to be a lot, I didn't expect that much, but I'm not surprised."

With pic 1 you're probably thinking, "no way!  Holy $%*# that's a lot of calories!"  I assume this because that's a pretty consistent response that I get when I ask people about the picture.

For most of the population, the Dunning Krueger effect is very real when it comes to estimating the calories of their meals.  In truth, even for professionals, it can be difficult at times (for instance at restaurants).

So what's the whole point of showing you those two pics?

  1. To show you that we need to get better at being able to estimate our food intake.; especially if you're having difficulty with managing your weight (more on that in part 2).

  2. If you had my predicted response to picture #2, then to communicate that, the answer to your response is "it depends" on if that is actually "a lot" of calories. 

In part 2 we will dive into how the answer is that "it depends" and use two examples of two different people.
